Description
About the project
A standard QR code quickly reaches its limits, with a maximum capacity of around 3 KB. This web project is an interactive demo developed as preliminary work for my bachelor’s thesis. It explores how mathematically layered codes, known as Multi-Layer QR codes, can significantly increase data capacity. The functional prototype aims to demonstrate how complex datasets can be transferred and managed directly through a visual medium, without relying on external servers or centralised infrastructure. I translated the mathematical principles described in research papers into a custom algorithm tailored to the prototype.
Challenges
What made this project special
Cross-Device Sessions & Real-Time Synchronisation The challenge: One of the biggest hurdles was connecting two different interfaces: a desktop web browser and a mobile device. Scanning the Multi-Layer QR code changes the interface on the phone, which needs to remain connected to the same active session while preserving data and keeping delays to a minimum. What this demonstrates: This part of the project demonstrates my understanding of stateful real-time communication and bidirectional session management between desktop and mobile clients. Hardware Limitations & the Prototype Decoder The challenge: Standard smartphone cameras and built-in QR scanners could not directly decode the Multi-Layer QR codes used in this demo. Separating the encoded layers required additional processing of colour and brightness information. The approach: I translated the mathematical model into a custom prototype decoder that prepares the encoded data for the web demo. This intermediate algorithm simulates decoding in the browser. For the final bachelor’s project, I am designing a dedicated app decoder that will process camera input directly.
